A photographer’s cherished images of 2024

Images by Mary Hurlbut

For Stu News Laguna, photojournalist Mary Hurlbut captures approximately 107 collections a year, each consisting of either 12 pictures (for a Laguna Life & People piece) or 28-36 pictures for an occasion. (Naturally, this count excludes any images she discards.) That’s a significant number of photographs.

Reflecting on a year filled with notable photo shoots and occasions to choose just a handful of images must be challenging, given that each evokes a unique emotional response. Nonetheless, for 2024, Mary selected four that resonated with her – for various reasons she elaborated on in the captions.

This portrait of Bob Taylor at his workshop is a favorite – captured for a “Laguna Life & People” article. The tools and metalwork in the backdrop contributed to the narrative, as did the light streaming in from the large entrance, but his exuberant character truly made it shine.

The Brooks Street 4th of July Ceremony and Parade has become a delightful custom for my family, and I’ve had the privilege to document it for many years. This image encapsulates all the joy, community spirit, and patriotism of that morning!

Capturing “Love Laguna Beach” permitted me a few treasured moments with Skipper, giving me the opportunity to take my last portrait of him. Hearing him exclaim, “Have a Home-Run Day” was a remarkable gift.

Winter Fantasy 2024 – Mayor Sue Kempf, Santa Chuck and shimmering snow bubbles in the sunlight alongside a gingerbread house all came together splendidly – I’m thrilled when a spontaneous photo turns out so beautifully because I had the foresight on where to position them.
