When you envision the Bahamas, the enormous resorts of Nassau likely come to mind — but then there are tranquil havens such as Hope Town. With fewer than 500 residents year-round, the worry of crowds dissipates, making it an ideal haven for The Island Retreat, a charming boutique hotel located in Hope Town on Elbow Cay within the Abaco Islands.

Tucked in nature along the shoreline, the most prominent sound at The Island Retreat is the crow of an early morning rooster. The tranquility was soothing. I took a deep breath, absorbing the vistas from the vast deck overlooking endless stretches of pristine white sand beach. This was my initial indication of why the resort received its name.

As I descended the deck stairs to the beach below, where no one else was visible, it felt as though I had landed on a secluded island. Naturally, the resort draws groups of friends and families celebrating weddings, significant birthdays, and family reunions. They may have the entire place to themselves.

With no throngs to serve, I appreciated the individualized attention from the owner, Sheri Falk. Nearly ten years ago, she and her late husband, Buzz, acquired the property they had fallen for during one of their numerous visits to Hope Town and the Abaco Islands. She made us feel at home as we conversed freely like long-time friends.

Unsurprisingly, her staff was welcoming too. Chris took excellent care of us, quickly providing us his contact number for any needs. He was dependable for offering recommendations on places to visit, arriving with additional Champagne, keeping us entertained, and driving us around in the golf cart. A bond developed swiftly, and we felt his absence when we departed. A stunning location becomes even more delightful when its inhabitants wear broad smiles and possess sizable hearts — this contributed to what made The Island Retreat truly exceptional.

The bottle of Champagne and charcuterie platter awaiting me in the kitchen of my elegantly appointed two-bedroom cottage was a delightful surprise — precisely what I needed to ease travel fatigue — and the arrival of a cook to prepare that evening’s dinner certainly felt indulgent. The banquet of Bahamian delicacies, including conch fritters, rice and peas, macaroni pie, fish, and chicken guaranteed a restful night’s sleep in my luxurious bed.

You simply cannot help but feel your breath being taken away here, whether you lounge on your patio with a book, listen to the soothing rhythm of the waves crashing below, or swim in the pool and relax into a lounger. I also appreciated the exclusive morning yoga session on the pool deck — gazing at the ocean while a gentle breeze enveloped me transported me to another realm, and I nearly dozed off during the meditation that concluded the class.

If embarking on a wild adventure is what you seek, The Island Retreat may not be ideal for you. Here, the focus is on introspection, rejuvenation, and renewal. Continue reading for a thorough review of this island sanctuary.

Mission accomplished.

Food and Drink

Falk and her husbandare hailing from Texas, with their heritage showcased through genuine Tex-Mex tastes and selections in the cuisine and drinks. The Cantina Restaurant & Bar offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner by the swimming pool. The ocean vistas enhance cocktail time, particularly during sunset. The highlight is the tacos, whether they feature achiote-marinated grilled chicken accompanied by chipotle crema, red onions, and cotija cheese, flank steak, or blackened shrimp. The kitchen also integrates local seafood in its fresh-catch fish tacos. The homemade jalapeño cheese bread breakfast sandwich is a memory you’ll carry with you even after returning home.

When it comes to drinks, it revolves around tequila: The artisanal margaritas are a popular choice on the island. Falk makes annual trips to Mexico and returns with small-batch bottles of unique tequilas.
