From relishing a book signing to engaging in a STEAM activity to taking part in a Murder Mystery New Year’s Eve gathering; here are three enjoyable activities to experience in Midland during the holiday recess.
Join the author of the fantasy short story compilation “Side Quest: Stories” for a book signing with local author Jalyn Renae Fiske. This event will take place from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 27 at The Waystone, located at 2101 W. Wadley Ave. Enthusiasts of fantasy literature, speculative writing, and Dungeons & Dragons are particularly encouraged to attend.
Fiske is not only an educator but also an archivist and librarian. She received her MFA in Creative Writing from Goddard College in 2017. In that same year, she commenced her role as fiction editor for James Gunn’s Ad Astra magazine. She has participated in several writing workshops at the Gunn Center for the Study of Science Fiction and the Ad Astra Institute for Science Fiction and Speculative Imagination. Her debut short story collection, “Side Quest: Stories,” was published in November. To learn more, visit www.jrenaewriter.com.
Parents can register their young innovators for morning and/or afternoon slots during the STEAM Break: School’s Out! program. This initiative will be hosted by the Permian Basin Petroleum Museum, located at 1500 Interstate 20. Each session offers a variety of interactive STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) projects and experiments. With diverse activities including maker challenges and 3D design laser cutting, there is something available for every student! STEAM Break accommodates children in 1st-6th grades.
STEAM Break: School’s Out! is scheduled for Dec. 30 and January 3. Three different session options are provided for each camp. The morning session runs from 8 a.m. to noon. The afternoon session is from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The all-day session extends from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Legacy Extreme, situated at 5606 Starboard Drive in Midland, plans to hold a Murder Mystery dinner from 7 p.m. until midnight on Tuesday, Dec. 31. The night will commence with a cocktail hour featuring a drink card for access to the Alcohol Wall. This drink card forms part of the ticket cost; nevertheless, additional drinks and cards will be available for purchase throughout the evening.
A four-course dinner will also be provided. Choices include steak, chicken, or vegetarian options, accompanied by all the sides and concluding with dessert. Attendees can look forward to a murder mystery themed around a 1920s gangster wedding. Ticket prices for this event start at $100 per person. This event is exclusively for adults aged 21 and over.
