Claire Martin has been recognized as the 2021-2022 girls swimmer of the year by The News Courier, following a remarkable tenure at both Athens High School and with the Athens Gators Swim Team. She is now set to attend Auburn University to advance her studies as she aims to become a veterinarian.
The News Courier conducted an interview with Martin to gain insights about her swimming journey with both the high school and the Gators, her aspirations at Auburn University, and the evolution of women’s sports throughout her lifetime.
Claire Martin
Q: What inspired you to start swimming initially?
A: My two older sisters swam, so my parents encouraged me to join the swim team to see if I enjoyed it. I fell for the sport and continued to swim for the next eleven years.
Q: What other sports have you participated in, either at Athens or prior to high school?
A: I began swimming at age seven for the Athens City Rec League. As a young child, I also played soccer and participated in Upward basketball. For a decade, I dedicated all my athletic efforts to swimming.
During my junior year, Athens High School needed additional girls for the tennis team. I decided to try out and absolutely adored tennis. I played throughout my junior and senior years in high school.
Q: What sets swimming apart from other sports?
A: Swimming is unique because it’s not considered a “mainstream” sport, particularly in Alabama. Many individuals perceive it as more of an individual sport instead of a team sport, but it’s truly both. You challenge yourself to achieve new personal records, yet during relays, you encourage your teammates to excel and outpace other relay teams.
Q: Who are some individuals that have contributed to your current success?
A: Numerous individuals have influenced my life and swimming journey. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the unwavering love and support I receive from my parents and family. I wouldn’t have achieved my swimming aspirations if my coach Robin Holland and Coach Anna Underwood hadn’t motivated me to reach my fullest potential.
Q: In what ways has women’s swimming evolved locally and nationally? Has it progressed alongside other women’s sports?
A: Women’s swimming faces challenges to grow locally due to limited swimming facilities. Swimmers like Missy Franklin and Katie Ledecky, among other phenomenal athletes, have played a crucial role in elevating the visibility of women’s swimming.
Q: What are your plans for the future?
A: My upcoming journey takes me to Auburn University, where I will study Animal Science, with the hope of attending Veterinary school thereafter. Even though I won’t be swimming for a collegiate team, I plan to swim for fitness.
Martin is the seventh athlete of the year highlighted in The News Courier, as all 22 athletes will have profiles showcasing their achievements, athletic prowess, and intelligence.
Congratulations to Martin for attaining her goals and moving on to Auburn for further education and preparation for her future.
