COLLEGE STATION, Texas — — Wade Taylor IV scored 15 points and achieved a career-best 10 assists, while Zhuric Phelps contributed 12 points and 10 rebounds in the No. 13 Texas A&M’s 92-54 victory over Abilene Christian on Saturday.
Taylor’s 15 points surpassed Vernon Smith, who tallied 1,778 points at A&M from 1977-81, moving him to second on Texas A&M’s all-time scoring chart. Taylor now has 1,779 career points and requires 212 more to overtake Bernard King, who accumulated 1,990 points from 1999-2003, becoming Texas A&M’s all-time leading scorer.
Taylor made his return after being absent for his first career game on Dec. 20 against Houston Christian.
The Aggies (11-2) commenced the game with a 7-0 spurt and never looked back. Texas A&M held a 48-29 lead at halftime and concluded the game with a 12-0 run over the final 5:24.
Quion Williams was the top scorer for Abilene Christian (8-6) with 14 points.
Abilene Christian: The Wildcats faced Texas A&M in November 2021, losing 81-80, but were too outmatched this season to mount an upset.
Texas A&M: The Aggies concluded nonconference play on a seven-game winning streak following Taylor’s return.
The Aggies enacted a 14-0 surge in the opening half, establishing an 18-point advantage. Texas A&M guard CJ Wilcher knocked down three consecutive 3-pointers during this period, including two in a row from the right wing during fast breaks. The Wildcats never managed to get back within single digits again.
Texas A&M further demonstrated its depth, amassing 45 points from the bench. Wilcher led with a season-high 14 points while forward Andersson Garcia added 12. All twelve active players contributed to the scoring.
The Aggies will kick off Southeastern Conference action against their rivals Texas on Jan. 4. Abilene Christian will conclude nonconference play at home against Stephen F. Austin on Dec. 31.
