Reflecting on a year filled with photography can often be a challenging ordeal. It’s not that I lack pride in my work, but during the review of my preferred photographs of the year, I frequently feel I could have executed things better. I often ask myself, “Seriously, friend? Is this the utmost you can achieve after 25 years as a professional?”
I am acutely aware that there are at least 13 to 17 other individuals worldwide who would be eager to possess my job. There are numerous advantages: an extravagant income, unrestricted entrée to press conferences, invitations to ribbon cuttings, and even the honor of capturing images of vacant buildings.
Yet, it’s not perpetually glitzy. Occasionally, I must photograph high-stakes college football matches and challenge my skills as I collide with a 300-pound lineman racing out of bounds.
I never succeed in that challenge.
I recognize how fortunate I am, which is why I feel so disheartened when I don’t deliver my finest work. There are likely at least 30 or 40 individuals peering at my images while they tidy their kitchens or remain on hold awaiting telecom customer support. This degree of viral recognition carries weight, and I owe it to my audience to improve. That will become my objective for 2025.
I also wish to take this moment to express my gratitude to all the individuals who have stood before my lens this year. New entrepreneurs, long-standing business owners, fashion models, activists, museum curators, artists, children playing in the snow, kids participating in bands, 300-pound linemen, Nico Iamaleava, and the countless encounters we’ve shared this season, the Tennessee supporters who pushed me to safety so I wouldn’t get hit by a descending field goal post, and last but certainly not least, my spouse, who – judging by the photos I take of her – believes I’m an awful photographer, along with the three dogs that remain perfectly still until the instant I click the camera shutter.
