In a major expansion this month, the newly formed Ilitch Gaming announced plans to pursue full ownership of two new casinos, including one on the Mississippi Coast.

Known for brands such as Little Caesars Pizza, the Detroit Tigers and Olympia Development, the corporate empire will soon purchase Scarlet Pearl Casino in D’Iberville, pending regulatory approvals and closing conditions.

Ilitch Companies announced the acquisition agreement as part of its new gaming platform, Ilitch Gaming. The corporation also owns MotorCity Casino Hotel in Detroit, Mich., and is moving toward full ownership of Ocean Casino Resort in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

“Scarlet Pearl has built something special over the past decade, and we look forward to supporting its continued success. Our focus is straightforward: support great teams, deliver exceptional guest experiences, invest in the communities we serve, and responsibly grow the business over time,” said John Policicchio, Ilitch Gaming CEO and chief development officer.

Prior to the deal, Coast-based real estate and development firm Land Holdings I held claim to the casino. The single-family entity opened the multimillion-dollar casino in 2015, with LuAnn Pappas serving as CEO.

Since opening, the casino has paid $30 million in gaming taxes, with $18 million going back into the city. It is also one of the city’s biggest employers, maintaining a staff of about 800 people.

“We are incredibly proud of what our team has built over the past decade and grateful for the support we have received from our guests across the Gulf Coast,” Pappas said.

Ilitch Gaming said the casino will continue serving guests and operating as usual until transactions are concluded. The company declined to comment on deal timelines and future operational changes.
