It’s been about 10 years now since I transformed a spare DSLR digital camera
to infrared. Five digital camera conversions later and I’m nonetheless enthusiastic about how
IR has jazzed up my hitherto feeble efforts at panorama pictures.
I’ve been a diehard B+W photographer for the reason that Nineteen Eighties, having burned
movie via a succession of 4×5, 5×7, 8×10 and pinhole cameras,
principally aimed on the standard suspects—deserted buildings, outdated barns,
ghost cities, eerie interiors, and many others—printing in silver after which platinum.
Occasional forays into straight panorama pictures taught me how
difficult it’s to grasp the black-and-white panorama print.
Infrared has develop into my secret sauce. Those vexingly muddled center
grays attribute of inexperienced surroundings when photographed in straight
B+W hop off an IR print as glowing highlights (typically an excessive amount of
so). And these pale blue skies that used to swallow up the clouds now
present up as deep wealthy tones, setting off the clouds in sensible trend.
And now, voila´, I’m a panorama photographer.
