About the speaker:

Joseph W. Ho is a historian of recent East Asia, Sino-US encounters, and transnational visible tradition and media. He is the co-editor of War and Occupation in China: The Letters of an American Missionary from Hangzhou, 1937–1938 (Lehigh University Press, 2017), co-author of Time Exposures: Catholic Photography and the Evolution of Modern China (Hong Kong University Press, 2026), and writer of Developing Mission: Photography, Filmmaking, and American Missionaries in Modern China (Cornell University Press, 2022).

Ho has held fellowships at Stanford University, the University of San Francisco, and Boston College, in addition to the EIHS Residency Research Fellowship on the University of Michigan. He serves because the collection editor for Studies in Christianity in East Asia at Lehigh University Press. Before rejoining the EIHS and the Department of History, Joseph was affiliate professor of East Asian historical past at Albion College.
