A photographer took 1000’s of unimaginable photos of pivotal moments in postwar Europe and mid-century America with a Leica digicam taken from a captured German soldier — which had been solely found by his household after his loss of life.

A brand new ebook, John Baer The Extraordinary Ordinary: A Memoir in Photographs, 1945–1954 (to be revealed on September 15, 2026) will reveal the pictures taken by unknown photographer John Baer for the primary time. In a narrative paying homage to Vivian Maier’s, Baer’s images remained unseen and unknown till after his passing when his son found 4,000 of his negatives, silver gelatin prints, and make contact with sheets.

In New York, Baer’s images seize a metropolis stuffed with optimism and rising as a middle of postwar capitalism. In the mid-Fifties, after years of honing his craft, Baer boxed up his work and stowed it away to give attention to his profession and caring for his household.

It was solely after his loss of life in 1994 that Baer’s son Andrew discovered three containers containing practically 4,000 negatives and prints courting from between 1945 and 1954. In 2021, Andrew and his spouse Megan started to uncover the contents of the containers. The launch of John Baer The Extraordinary Ordinary marks the primary time these photos have been revealed and shared.
