Captivating Canines and Feline Fame: 25 Stunning Victors of the Pet Photography Awards

The award-winning images from the International Pet Photography Awards, IPPA, offer a touching, lively, and continually creative glimpse into the animals that inhabit our lives, bringing happiness as pets.

Now in its sixth iteration, IPPA — the largest Pet Photography contest globally — attracted a multitude of submissions from 41 nations and introduced a special equine category for the inaugural time, honoring photographers who focus on that specific sub-genre of Pet Photography.

The additional categories encompass Action, Creative, Documentary, Pets and People, and Portrait.

Not surprisingly, amidst a diverse array of other pets including hedgehogs, rabbits, and a rat, the predominant images featured dogs, followed closely by — hold your breath — cats.

The grand winner receives $500 and a trophy, while each category victor gets a $250 award along with guidance from Unleashed Education and the Professional Photography Business Network.

The overall 2024 Pet Photographer of the Year honor was granted to Janneke De Graaf for her collection of photographs showcasing her Basenjis dog. “My partner and I have four at home, three of which we have bred ourselves,” De Graaf states.

“Basenjis possess a striking, rather serious demeanor and very graceful contours, making them distinctive in photos,” Janneke notes. “Their compliance, or absence of it, can pose challenges for positioning them, thus a handler is nearly always necessary.”

Pet Photography Overall Finalists

Karen Bruhin captured her dog perfectly harmonized with the columns.

This is Renate Zudema’s personal pony and the photograph was taken during sunset, in a field adorned with blooming purple heather.

Pet Photography Creative Awards

Katie Brockman triumphed in the creative category with this delightful photo of her former foster kittens.

“They are siblings, and I aimed for an image that reflected both of their characters,” she explains. “Ed was an impish and grumpy boy, whereas Cleo was incredibly playful and enjoyed teasing her siblings.”

Yzma, the cat, is posing for her first-year life stages series.

Sabrina Einig secured the first-ever equine category title for her energetic capture of Friso, a 7-year-old Friesian stallion.

Pet Portraits

The photograph of Anna Failner’s golden retriever, Tala, was captured in a forest in Veldensteiner Forst, Germany, on a misty morning in August as the sun gradually ascended.

This depiction of Boops A Daisy, an African Pygmy Hedgehog, was taken at Rachel Hendrie’s studio in Glasgow, Scotland, for a couple devoted to rescuing hedgehogs.

The piece, titled “Curious Flower,” aims to exhibit the charm and fascinating nature of one of the most misunderstood pets worldwide.

The star, a rescue rat named Buttons, displays his curious spirit peeking from a flower pot.

Heidi Adler was photographing the dog when the cat leaped onto the stump and photobombed the shot, then settled in beside his buddy. “These two share the most adorable bond, and I hope that is evident in the photo,” she remarks.

Pets In Action

This image was captured at a sand excavation location in Norway. The model featured is a whippet, a sighthound breed renowned for its graceful and elegant movements.

“Snow days are something my dogs thoroughly enjoy,” Shandess Griffin explains. “This moment captures a brief glimpse of my dog relishing snow zoomies.”

“Cats are never straightforward to capture on camera,” states Jaydene Chapman. “I allowed Lady to roam freely, and she instinctively sprung into action.”

Pets And People

Amelia, a teacher, along with her Assistance Dog, Mr. Darcy, at New Farm, Brisbane.

Mr. Darcy assists Amelia in her classroom. While the children adore him — he possesses an ID badge and receives more Christmas gifts than any other staff member — the dog is there to aid her in her teaching duties.

Documentary Category

An early morning task for this New Zealand Huntaway dog: to guide weaned lambs into the pens. The dogs maneuver the lambs through barking. This shot captured plenty of action, as the horses approached for a look and the sun began to pierce through the clouds.

“Good Stella” operates on a sheep-and-cattle farm known as ‘Wolverton’ in Maindample, Victoria, Australia. As a livestock truck entered the property, Stella dashed to the driveway and patiently awaited the start of her duties.
