groundbreaking road pictures exhibition opens at Usher Gallery – Lincolnshire County Council

Last summer time, Richard Ansett joined the crowds of buyers on Lincoln’s High Street. Armed together with his trusty top-down viewfinder digicam, he snapped dozens of spontaneous pictures, capturing moments from a day within the lifetime of the town.  

Now the images are happening show in a groundbreaking Arts Council England-funded exhibition, known as ‘RICHARD ANSETT: Liminal Presence’, on the Usher Gallery.

Filling the partitions of the gallery from floor-to-ceiling, ‘Liminal Presence’ is bodily one of many largest solo exhibitions of road pictures by a dwelling artist.

For Richard – an award-winning portrait photographer whose work has been displayed internationally and has featured in The National Portrait Gallery – this exhibition is a primary. 

He explains: “Portrait pictures could be a meticulous course of. You can take a very long time build up a relationship with an individual to make them really feel snug. I will need to have taken tons of of hundreds of images however capturing that excellent photograph can really feel just like the holy grail! In Lincoln I wished to strive a totally completely different method, which is why I name this exhibition a ‘street photography experiment’.

“As an outsider, I arrived figuring out little or no about Lincoln or its excessive road. I solely knew that I wished to take genuine pictures of individuals going about their lives.

“Whilst these photos shall be enormous, I hope in a small means they are going to present that there’s magnificence and drama in our on a regular basis lives.”

The Usher Gallery – Lincoln’s free public artwork gallery

Cllr Natalie Oliver, government member for tradition at Lincolnshire County Council, stated:

“The Usher Gallery has helped individuals to take pleasure in among the nation’s most interesting artwork for nearly 100 years, however on this particular exhibition it’s the individuals of Lincoln who take centre stage.

“In a primary for the gallery, Richard’s great pictures of Lincoln’s buyers shall be printed onto big vinyl and displayed from flooring to ceiling. There’ll be no gaps between the pictures, that means the pictures will fill the area, surrounding guests.

“I hope people take the time to visit the exhibition and enjoy this celebration of Lincolnshire and its people.”

RICHARD ANSETT: Liminal Presence opens on Saturday 22 November 2025 and continues till Sunday 15 February 2026.
