TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – The Briarwood Swim Club says it has been coping with repeated trespassing and vandalism all through the summer time, with incidents occurring as continuously as as soon as per week.
Board President Derrick Baxter stated the injury has included furnishings and tools being thrown into the pool.
“Sometimes, chairs or tables or things like that have been thrown in the pool. And we got tires that we use for swim team, and stuff like that, so then it becomes a retrieval,” Baxter stated.
Financial impression
The incidents have created a monetary burden for the membership, diverting cash away from pool upkeep and enhancements towards safety measures.
“We did install a couple of new cameras this year, and those are — the security system with the alarm system is part of measures where we would much rather spend it on other things,” Baxter stated.
Law enforcement response
Baxter stated the digital camera set up got here on the suggestion of regulation enforcement, which he stated has restricted means to intervene.
“They said, ‘We could file the reports, but without more information, it’s just kind of a report. And if they have time, they’ll try to come by, but if there’s nobody by the pool, then they just keep going,’” Baxter stated.
The most up-to-date break-in occurred Wednesday.
Safety considerations
Topeka resident Magen Hawkinson, who has a membership with the membership, stated after-hours guests pose a security danger with out lifeguards current.
“We rely heavily on the lifeguards when they’re present, and when they’re not present, I feel less free to relax. Water is just a scary place to be around at night and in the dark, especially — that’s risky,” Hawkinson stated.
Baxter stated chemical hazards add to the hazard for anybody getting into the pool exterior of working hours.
“We have to add chemicals sometimes, and unfortunately, it can cause some serious injuries to people jumping in if they didn’t know that we just added a bunch of chlorine just an hour or two earlier,” Baxter stated.
Baxter urged anybody wanting to make use of the pool to go to throughout common hours.
“We’d love to have you at the pool, just come to the pool during hours. We have options. We have ways, we’ll make it work out to where you guys can enjoy it. Just for your safety, and for the safety of the pool, come during hours, not after hours,” Baxter stated.
