Beaver terrorizes upstate NY swimmers as officers difficulty dire warning about rabid rodents

A beaver “out for blood” attacked two swimmers at a quaint upstate New York trip spot, prompting officers to difficulty a warning about rabid rodents within the space.

Brandon Shortsleeve informed NBC 5 that he and his pal had been bitten by a beaver on July 4 whereas out for a swim on Turtle Island, a small isle on the west coast of Lake George. 

“The first time my friend ended up picking it up, it swam back at him, so we were like, okay, it’s just out for blood,” Shortsleeve informed the outlet.

“I just jumped in the water, and then I grabbed whatever it was [that was] attacking and pulled it out.”

Shortsleeve mentioned he was bitten a number of instances by the beaver after he tried to rend it off of his pal who was “freaking out” whereas the water rat had attacked him. 

“I was like, okay, this is a beaver. It ended up biting me a few times as I got it out of the water. I’ve got to keep a good grip on this thing, then I just tossed him pretty far,” Shortsleeve mentioned. 

Shortsleeve and his pal’s run-in with the rowdy rodent is trigger for concern, officers mentioned. 

The assault was investigated by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), who discovered a dead beaver with rabies five days later, officials told News 10.

While it’s unclear if the useless beaver was the identical one which attacked Shortsleeve and his pal, DEC officers mentioned that the recovered rabid beaver could have contaminated others at a close-by colony. 

Officials are warning the general public to take warning whereas close to the water on Turtle Island, and report any beavers demonstrating uncommon conduct to the authorities. 

“Boaters and campers should exercise utmost caution and are advised to avoid contact with beaver while recreating,” the DEC mentioned in a press release.

Swimmers in New York aren’t the one ones who’ve needed to deal with unpredicable beavers this 12 months.

Back in May, an 8-year-old boy in New Jersey was attacked by a rabid beaver whereas fishing with household at Lake Henry within the Continental Soldiers Park.

The fast-acting teen was caught on viral video flinging the critter again into the water after the assault.
