LACP explores paperwork America at 250 by way of images

The Los Angeles Center of Photography will current two exhibitions this summer season and fall inspecting documentary pictures within the United States because the nation celebrates its 250th anniversary.

Curated by Dr. Rotem Rozental, “Expand and Contract: Notes About Documentary Photography in the Twenty-First Century” opens with a reception on Saturday, July 25, from 3-5 p.m., together with a gallery walkthrough at 3:30 p.m.

The group exhibition examines American documentary pictures throughout the first quarter of the twenty first century, exploring topics together with the Sept. 11 terrorist assaults, political protests, immigration, incarceration, housing, wildfires and neighborhood restoration.

Featured artists embrace Susan Meiselas, whose set up examines the U.S.-Mexico border by way of a photographic mural and digital imagery documenting deportations and encounters with Immigration and Customs Enforcement brokers; Isadora Kosofsky, whose work focuses on households affected by incarceration in Florida; Eric Smith, who has documented protests in Los Angeles from 2016 by way of 2026; Marcus Ubungen, whose portraits chronicle rebuilding efforts in Altadena following wildfire devastation; documentary filmmaker Keva Rosenfeld, who presents Polaroid portraits reflecting cultural modifications throughout the rise of digital know-how; and John Senese, who debuts a beforehand unseen sequence documenting the World Trade Center and Sept. 11.

A second exhibition, “Timeline: A Record of the Moment,” opens with a reception on Friday, Aug. 28, from 3-5 p.m., with a walkthrough scheduled for 3:30 p.m.

The exhibition options long-form documentary tasks created all through 2026 by photographers in Los Angeles and San Francisco taking part in mentorship applications led by Ed Kashi and Ibarionex Perello. Featured photographers embrace David Ellis, Karen Friedmann, Patricia Lemke, Julie Pawlowski, Philip Sager, Nicole Schwegman, Chris Stevens-Yu and Xan Walker.
