I first met Alessandra Bobba by way of the examine group led by the great curator Eder Chiodetto. Over time, I got here to know not solely her inventive observe, but in addition the extraordinary journey she was constructing alongside her son, Lucca. What steadily unfolded earlier than me was way over a photographic mission—it was an everlasting act of affection, endurance, and unwavering presence.

Last 12 months, that journey was tenderly gathered into the pages of Viagem em Família (Family Journey), a e book that delicately weaves years of shared life right into a deeply shifting visible narrative. It is each an intimate household archive and a strong reflection on care, resilience, and the profound bond between a mom and her baby.

It fills my coronary heart with pleasure to share this exceptional work with Lenscratch readers. Some tasks transfer us by way of their magnificence; others by way of their honesty. Viagem em Família does each with extraordinary grace.

Viagem em Família

Viagem em Família proposes a pact between MOTHER and SON. As an artist, I set up a dialogue with my twelve-year-old son, Lucca, round his biggest dream: a household journey.

After surviving cardiac arrest at two months outdated, in addition to different problems from an irreversible mind harm that resulted in quadriplegia, Lucca lives with well being situations that forestall him from spending lengthy intervals away from house. Despite these limitations, we determined to embark on the journey that was doable for him: an imaginary journey through which our gazes converge, views shift, and the world opens up earlier than us with out borders, limits, or obstacles.

We use analog and digital pinhole images, different analog and digital photographic processes, and digital collage to form this journey, through which one {photograph} turns into one other, metamorphosing by way of relationships of affinity with the picture that got here earlier than it.

Lucca communicates by way of a tool that interprets his eye actions and commenced actively taking part in our photographic outings, deciding when and the place every picture could be made. I’d place my hand over his, and collectively we might press the shutter button. Sometimes the motion was unsteady and the ultimate picture got here out blurred, which, for us, was an absolute success: a trustworthy document of our manner of speaking. We included this error as a part of our creativeness.

Our worlds as mom and son, linked by way of images, grew even stronger of their variations and singularities. The lengthy publicity instances, the absence of a lens, and the unpredictability of the method echoed our personal unhurried rhythms, crammed with silences and discoveries.

“In VIAGEM EM FAMÍLIA, Alessandra and Lucca, with their glowing eyes and hearts, trusted that invention is a matter animated by the silence of imagination. This photobook is an invitation to let ourselves be carried by the wings of a boy who takes flight into a world open to the potential of being and existing. After all, ‘everything I do not invent is false,’ wrote Manoel de Barros.” (Fabiana Bruno)
