Shelby man dies after diving into swimming pool 

SUMMIT TOWNSHIP — A 43-year-old Shelby man died after reportedly diving right into a swimming pool within the 4800 block of West Birch Lane Tuesday afternoon, July 14, in accordance with Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole.

“On Tuesday, July 14, 2026 at 4:20 PM, emergency crews responded to the 4800 block of West Birch Lane in Mason County’s Summit Township for a reported male subject unresponsive in a swimming pool,” states Sheriff Cole in a press launch.

“Family reported the male had jumped into the pool, headfirst, and didn’t come again to the floor. Family members and Riverton Fire Department (personnel) eliminated the individual from the pool, and lifesaving efforts started instantly. Despite these efforts, the male was pronounced useless at Corewell Health Hospital in Ludington.

“The victim is being identified as a 43-year-old Shelby man,” stated Sheriff Cole. “Riverton Fire, Life EMS, and the Mason County Victim’s Services Unit all assisted deputies on the scene.

“The case will remain under investigation pending a cause of death by WMED.”
