Long Island sharks: Point Lookout seashore closed after lifeguards spot 9-foot shark in water

POINT LOOKOUT, Nassau County (WABC) — Officials at a Long Island seashore are on excessive alert after lifeguards noticed a 9-foot shark within the water.

Point Lookout and neighboring Hempstead seashores have been pink flagged for swimming on Thursday following the sighting.

Two teenagers who have been out browsing at 9:45 a.m. on Thursday mentioned they noticed it up shut.

“Like some shadow in the water, kinda charging at us, he turned like four feet away, I saw a full body of a shark,” mentioned surfer Brendan Halpin.

Hempstead Lifeguard Eamon Flynn instantly confirmed it.

“Sometimes it could be a dolphin, could not be, but this was fairly easy to identify,” Flynn mentioned. “The second we put our eyes on it, we knew that it was a shark.”

Lifeguards patrolled the shore and used jet skis and drones, as all city seashores have been closed to swimming in 100-degree-plus temperatures, as far west as Long Beach.

Swimmers dipped their ft in and weren’t allowed again in till about 1:15 p.m.

“Of course on what may be the most hottest day of the year, the shark decides to pay a visit to the town of Hempstead waterways,” mentioned Hempstead Town Supervisor John Ferretti.
