Special Olympics Mississippi strikes state video games to Louisiana, holds swimming occasions in-state

BILOXI, Miss. (WLOX) — Special Olympics Mississippi will maintain its State Summer Games May 22–24 at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, Louisiana, with swimming competitions persevering with to happen in Mississippi.

Officials with the Special Olympics stated the video games have been moved from Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi to Louisiana due to safety issues.

“When they canceled the state games this year, it made it a little bit rough on some of the athletes, but they continued to train,” Sharon Patterson, Director for Area 3, stated.

The swimming competitions will happen in Mississippi as a result of Louisiana doesn’t embrace swimming in its occasions. Two swimming occasions are scheduled for May 9, one in Tupelo and one other on the Natatorium in Biloxi.

A torch run started in North Mississippi on Monday and can arrive in Bay St. Louis on Thursday.

“It’s a run, walk, or roll because we have wheelchairs in there as well,” Patterson stated.

On Friday, the torch run will transfer by way of Pass Christian and journey alongside Highway 90, with regulation enforcement officers from every metropolis carrying the torch by way of their jurisdictions.

The run will conclude at Keesler Federal Park in Biloxi, the place the Biloxi Shuckers are sponsoring a celebration that includes the lighting of the cauldron. A particular athlete will sing the “Star-Spangled Banner,” lead the pledge and recite the oath.
