‘Agatha’s Almanac’ Overview: Dwelling Off the Land

On a 54-acre farm in Manitoba, Canada, Agatha Bock leads what seems to be a largely self-sufficient life. She single-handedly raises all kinds of vegatables and fruits; her typical dinner, she says, consists of radish on selfmade bread. During the course of “Agatha’s Almanac,” which was filmed over six years, she will get working water for the primary time in a decade. (It’s jarring to be taught that she has a microwave.) If Bock, now in her 90s, had been only a bit more unusual, then this fitfully charming documentary — whose director, Amalie Atkins, is Bock’s niece — may reply a query cinephiles by no means thought to ask: What if “Grey Gardens” concerned precise gardening?

But Bock, regardless of some quirks (she’s recognized in her household because the “duct tape queen”), has an unflappable sense of who she is. And Atkins has boundless affection for her way of life, which she captures in searing colours on 16-millimeter movie. Among different issues, “Agatha’s Almanac” is a compendium of Bock’s green-thumb knowledge. (The finest watermelons, she says, usually give off a uninteresting sound when rapped. She additionally grows them in large sizes.) Some of her different routines, like carrying mismatched footwear and cataloging a staggering array of home items with masking-tape labels, skew extra eccentric.

Gradually, Atkins parcels out private particulars. Bock shares recollections of a number of sisters who died younger. Her hyper-organization registers as a philosophy and, maybe, a distraction from her solitude. (“I’ve never really been very lonely because I always have something to do,” she says of getting spent her life single.) And whereas not all the things that Bock does is equally fascinating — a director’s private connection to a topic could be each a bonus and a hindrance — a good quantity of it’s endearing, even inspiring.
