Rene Matić wins 2026 Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize

Rene Matić has been awarded the £30,000 Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize for his or her exhibition AS OPPOSED TO THE TRUTH, which occurred at CCA Berlin from 8 November 2024 to fifteen February 2025. The artist was chosen from a shortlist of 4 together with Jane Evelyn Atwood, Weronika Gęsicka and Amak Mahmoodian, who will every obtain £5,000.

Matić is a London-based artist and author working throughout pictures, movie, set up and sound to discover concepts of identification, intimacy, race, gender and belonging. Through installations combining documentary pictures and snapshots of on a regular basis life, they carry out buried tensions and paradoxes. Their current exhibitions embrace the 2025 Turner Prize, Cartrwright Hall Art Gallery, Bradford;  AS OPPOSED TO THE TRUTH, CCA Berlin, Berlin, 2024–25; Rene Matić/Oscar Murillo JAZZ, Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna, 2024; a woman for the lounge, Martin Parr Foundation, Bristol, 2023; and upon this rock, South London Gallery, London, 2022.

Matić’s pictures ‘captures everyday life with tenderness and intimacy’, stated Anne-Marie Beckmann, director of the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation and member of the jury, in an announcement. ‘The importance of chosen family and community shines through. Rene’s images rejoice the togetherness of individuals – whether or not they’re laughing, kissing or partying.’

Founded in 1996, the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize rewards artists and their tasks for ‘having made the most significant contribution to international contemporary photography in Europe over the past 12 months.’

Rene Matić’s work, alongside that of all shortlisted artists, is on view on the Photographers’ Gallery, London, by 7 June.
