Star Wars is stuffed with love tales, and so was Andor—even when it ran the entire spectrum from highly effective romances to simply a few of the most downright poisonous. Splitting someplace within the center between love story and whole catastrophe was the messy marriage of Mon Mothma and Perrin Fertha, and in response to one author, it’s precisely that balancing act that made the Chandrilan couple so compelling to observe.

Alexander Freed bought to put in writing a few of our earliest appears to be like at Perrin and Mon’s relationship in The Mask of Fear, the primary of a deliberate trilogy of Star Wars novels known as Reign of the Empire that’s overlaying the 20-year interval between the Empire’s rise and the true starting of the Galactic Civil War. Set shortly after Revenge of the Sith, the cracks within the Mothma-Fertha family, whilst Mon pushed herself an increasing number of to the aspect of resistance in opposition to the Empire, weren’t as outstanding as they have been by the point we might see the couple in Andor‘s first season. But chatting with Polygon, Freed mentioned that discovering that steadiness between Mon and Perrin as their relationship waxes and wanes is a part of the enchantment, particularly when their marriage does in the end begin to splinter.

“I enjoy getting deep into the flaws of characters who are trying their best but falling into bad habits anyway,” Freed stated of the couple. “It’s something I return to a lot and something that embodies [Mon and Perrin’s relationship] to a large degree. Perrin is not a monster. Mon is certainly not a monster, but they have found themselves in a situation where their relationship is not working, yet it is deeply carved into their lives. Neither of them really knows how to live without it.”

“There’s a lot of really interesting emotional meat there. […] It was enjoyable to get to dive into that,” Freed continued. “I became incredibly fond of Mon and Perrin while working on them. They were delightful to write.”

Of course, by Andor, the cracks in Mon and Perrin’s marriage are clear for all to see—even when there are nonetheless sparks right here and there of what love that they had for one another. It makes Mask of Fear all of the extra fascinating that, regardless of being chronologically earlier, it was launched sandwiched between Andor‘s first and second seasons, which not only saw the husband and wife thrust back into the marriage rites of their culture thanks to daughter Leida but ultimately ends with Mon fleeing Coruscant and her husband, and Perrin emptily finding the comforts of his lavish life with other women. But Freed didn’t have an excessive amount of of a chance to actually go deep into their relationship with a view to keep away from any potential points linking up with Andor‘s sophomore season.

“Everything that was getting written was getting read by Lucasfilm folks. So had I gone astray, it would have gotten caught.” Freed added. “The general vibe was like, ‘Yeah, play with this a bit, but don’t go ridiculously deep with it, either. This is largely going to be living within the TV show, so try to keep this to subplot level.’ And that was fine with me.”

It may need solely been a subplot in Mask of Fear, however with Mon, Perrin, and Leida all set to seem within the subsequent Reign novel, Edge of the Abyss, little doubt we’ll get to see much more of their fracturing relationship because the novels edge nearer and near the time of Andor.
