Dazzling images present nature in a brand new approach

Photographer Jon McCormack has discovered himself repelling into Arctic ice caves in Svalbard, Norway, diving into the frigid waters off the coast of British Columbia and hanging out of helicopter doorways above southern Kenya all seeking his subsequent nice image.

But regardless of many grand adventures, it was an unlikely set of images he took only a mile from his residence that propelled him on a years-long endeavor to {photograph} nature from a brand new perspective.

It was 2020 and the Covid-19 pandemic had introduced McCormack’s world to a halt. So he started a brand new routine: A nightly stroll alongside the seaside close to his home in Pacific Grove, California. His digicam made the journey with him.

By the time the world opened again up, McCormack’s images had basically modified. “I’d become, by then, a different photographer,” he stated. Instead of grand landscapes and sweeping vistas, McCormack was drawn to “these small patterns and these small vignettes in nature.”

“I just started to see them everywhere,” he recalled.

The patterns McCormack has captured and rediscovered since fill the pages of his new monograph Patterns: Art of the Natural World. In it, readers will discover arresting and colourful images with topics which are recognizable and in addition just about indistinguishable. “I’ve been a photographer for 40 years and it turns out that I’ve been photographing patterns for a lot of that time,” he stated. “It was just never an intentional thing. It was just sort of part of who I was.”

While most of the footage are from far-off corners of the planet, McCormack emphasizes: “Nature is never that far away.” The e book features a macro picture of a hibiscus flower from his good friend’s suburban backyard and images from his first days strolling on that Northern California seaside.

Ultimately, McCormack’s hope is that his e book — which is deliberately not “a fine art book” — will assist folks really feel like nature is accessible to them.
