Special Olympics South Carolina celebrates USA Games workforce

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) – Special Olympics South Carolina celebrated its 2026 USA Games workforce Saturday in Columbia, honoring the 124-member delegation set to symbolize the Palmetto State in Minneapolis.

The occasion on the South Carolina soccer workforce’s indoor apply facility introduced collectively athletes, households and supporters as Team South Carolina prepares for the nationwide video games.

The celebration served because the workforce’s ultimate gathering earlier than departure, offering athletes and households with data forward of the journey. Attendees noticed the official workforce uniform unveiling and met delegation members.

Special Olympics South Carolina President Barry Coats mentioned the athletes have been working and coaching towards this purpose for years as they put together to compete in Minneapolis.

“Everybody loves a nice-looking uniform, and our staff put some nice stuff together, but they’re there to compete,” Coats mentioned. “They’re true athletes. They’ve been working on this for years. They’re excited. They’re ready to get there and compete.”

The delegation is made up of athletes, Unified companions, coaches, and workers who will journey to Minnesota to compete and symbolize South Carolina on the nationwide stage.

Team South Carolina will compete in 13 sports activities: observe and discipline, basketball, bocce, bowling, cheerleading, flag soccer, golf, gymnastics, pickleball, powerlifting, softball, swimming, and tennis.

The 2026 Special Olympics USA Games will happen June 20-26. Team South Carolina departs June 19 from Columbia Metropolitan Airport and returns to Columbia on June 27.
